ABOUT ME

Cooking at home in New York City seems like a crazy idea to most people. Whenever I talk about going home to cook dinner on a weeknight, people look at me like I'm attempting an impossible mission. Especially in a galley kitchen! After all, this is Manhattan, where you can order the best gourmet food at the touch of a button. Lobster rolls for lunch, short ribs for dinner, and cookies at midnight. Or you can go out to a trendy hotspot and try an amazing dish you never knew even existed. Don't get me wrong, I love going to restaurants; in fact, that might be my favorite thing about living in NYC. But not on Sundays. Even if I fail on all the other days, never Sundays.

Cooking has always been a big part of my family, and a lot of my memories from childhood involve watching my mother bake up a cake from scratch at the blink of an eye when surprise guests arrive, or staying at my grandmother’s and watching her cook the simplest things with a huge amount of joy, and turn them into delicious little bites for her grandchildren. When I first started to live on my own, I found that making food always made my apartment feel like a home. No matter how small my kitchen is, how few my tools, or how tiny the serving space, I always find joy in making food for myself and my friends. So I urge you to stay in this Sunday, and make one of my recipes, and feel like you're at home no matter where you are in the world.

Before you dive in, a few fair warnings: first of all, I have no formal cooking training. I taught myself how to cook by watching the Food Network one college night when I was sick of ordering in pizza and missed my mom's homemade meals. Secondly, I am not a professional photographer, either. Like you, I’m cooking to eat, not to blog, and I'm lucky to snag a few pictures with my iPhone before I start to dig in. If you’re looking for beautiful photography that took the blogger two hours to shoot on a tripod with a makeshift set to control the lighting while spraying the food with water, look elsewhere. My food won’t always be pretty, but it will be delicious! And that’s what matters most.
